China-based automotive company BYD is nearly set to unveil the first premium D-segment sedan model belonging to the Dynasty range. Lu Tian, who happens to be the general manager of the sales division in charge of the Dynasty range, unveiled the first ever images of the brand’s upcoming premium model. Known internally as the Han 9 or Great Han, this new model is a major move by BYD to attract luxury customers from around the world.
The name of this new premium vehicle was chosen after a crowdsourcing event held publicly. BYD had come up with six options to choose from, and “Great Han” was finally chosen by the community. This upcoming sedan will also have a very close relationship to the upcoming Great Tang flagship SUV. This duo of premium sedans will face quite the challenge of lifting the brand from its mass market position to that of luxury.

Great Han has a luxurious design with elegant proportions. The electric sedan boasts a long body and long wheelbase in a bid to create spacious cabin interiors. Its roofline is sloped downwards from the location of the B-pillar, resulting in a fastback silhouette. Its front part carries characteristics of the smaller Han L sedan, including its horizontal trim piece connecting its two headlights. The sedan’s rear bumper receives its own special touch, complemented by a full width taillight assembly for its rear end.
Interior-wise, the cabin layout of the electric sedan bears resemblance to that of the luxurious Great Tang SUV, particularly with respect to its steering wheel and a high-quality dashboard setup with emphasis on both luxury and technology. Its premium models have a LiDAR sensor located in the roof space, helping the sedan enjoy full-scenario smart driving capabilities courtesy of its advanced intelligent driving assistance systems.

The BYD Great Han will be made available in two different powertrain options: PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicles) and BEV (battery electric vehicles). The electric versions of the BYD Great Han will be powered by the second-generation Blade Battery. The LFP blade battery will combine with high-voltage technology for megawatts ultrafast charging.
Customers have two major choices: one with all-wheel drive and LiDAR technology to offer a driving range of 880 kilometers; another with rear-wheel drive and LiDAR sensor technology to give a driving range of 1,008 kilometers.

The EV is expected to be launched officially in the third quarter of the current year. The new car model should prove to be more successful than the smaller Han L sedan that faces serious challenges in the Chinese market, experiencing a drop of 69.5% in April sales compared to the previous year, resulting in 1,001 cars sold.
The appearance of the Great Han plays a crucial role in the financial well-being of the Chinese manufacturer. Being under fierce competition and increasing supply costs, BYD experienced a steep decrease in net income in the first quarter. For the company to improve its financial standing, the success of these flagship models is crucial.

Fortunately, company sales as a whole are showing some promising signs of improvement. BYD achieved a wholesale volume of 383,453 new energy vehicles in May, marking only a slight year-over-year increase of 0.26%. Such a slight rise in sales managed to bring an end to the eight-month losing sales trend. According to the latest sales data, the brand maintained its leading position in sales, reaching 376,990 units sold in May.
Great customer interest in the Great Tang SUV promises good things for the upcoming sedan. Launching the premium SUV will happen in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, halfway through June. Pre-orders for the SUV started at the end of April and ranged from RMB 250,000 (€31,560) up to RMB 320,000 (€40,390).
