BMW Z4 Final Edition Revealed as Stylish Farewell to Iconic Roadster

BMW Z4 Final Edition Brings a Special Goodbye to BMW’s Open-Top Sports Car

BMW Roadster

BMW has officially unveiled its new BMW Z4 Final Edition, and for Z4 enthusiasts in the US, this marks what appears to be a final goodbye to what many consider one of the last true open-top drivers cars left standing. This isn’t a complete redesign or even a new generation of a car, per se, but rather a thoughtful and exclusive sendoff for the current generation of Z4, also known as the G29, and its analog charm, which has become increasingly hard to find in a world dominated by SUVs and crossovers. According to BMW M, production on the current Z4 will cease in March 2026, making this a likely collector’s edition car.

What sets the Final Edition apart is not only the badge. According to BMW, the main visual distinction is the “exclusive BMW Individual Frozen Matt Black paint finish, combined with M High Gloss Shadowline trim and red M Sport brakes.” Inside, the Z4 gets “red contrast stitching, M Sport seats upholstered in Vernasca leather and Alcantara, an M Alcantara steering wheel, and door sill plates with an engraved M badge.” While the changes are not dramatic, they give the Z4 a more focused, premium, and celebratory feel

For the American consumer, the real draw is what the Z4 still stands for. The current generation Z4 was launched in 2018, and BMW was keen to highlight its take on the classic two-seat roadster, with its long hood, rear-wheel drive, low seating position, and soft-top roof. The formula still applies, especially in an age where roadsters are rapidly disappearing. BMW is keen to highlight that the Final Edition will be available across all Z4 engine options, regardless of transmission type, as long as the correct package is ordered. The order window is expected to open in late January 2026.

In the States, however, most car enthusiasts will likely be most interested in the Z4 M40i, as this remains the sweet spot for performance in the Z4 line, boasting a 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine churning out 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, according to BMW M. This level of performance in a compact roadster still feels old-school in the best sense of the word, fast, agile, and optimized for enjoyment rather than utility.

What gives the Z4 Final Edition particular relevance for car enthusiasts in America, however, is its heritage. Note, for instance, how BMW points out to readers its heritage, stating, “The Z4 name has a long and storied past, and our Final Edition model has its roots in the E85, which was produced in our plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.” Indeed, over time, the Z4 has evolved from a raw, unrefined roadster to a refined premium sports car, and while never fully losing its original essence, this Final Edition does not try to reinvent its heritage, simply celebrating it.

For the U.S. customer looking for the kind of stylish, rear-drive, two-seat BMW with attitude that the Z4 always was, the Z4 Final Edition appears to be the kind of sendoff they’ll appreciate. It’s not flashy or overwrought. It’s just the Z4, and maybe the best Z4 yet.
