The Geely EX2 is the most popular vehicle in China, and there was certainly plenty to like about it.
I’m making my way through a very tight figure eight on a small course set up by Geely for the press in their home city of Hangzhou with a pair of tiny tires that are begging for mercy. I’m pushing it pretty hard and it’s leaned in and struggling, but with the light steering, it’s easy to throw it around and get through the next group of cones. I’m coming in hot on the last cone before throwing on the brakes, cutting the corner and accelerating out – “Man, this isn’t bad.”
And that we don’t think many EX2 owners are going to give their cars anything close to what I did. But there is no question whatsoever that there are a lot of EX2 owners, since Geely’s B-class hatchback was the best-selling automobile in all of China at the close of 2025. (The B class is a fiercely competitive one in China, with several makes competing for market share; there are even two by popular EV manufacturer BYD). It is also becoming an international success story, having gained customers in Brazil, Mexico, and England. Oh yes—and it costs only $10,000.
Affordability is a problem throughout the world, and few vehicles, let alone electric cars, are less expensive for a Chinese consumer than the EX2. Don’t write it off as some cheap tin can or golf cart equivalent, because our test drive shows that it definitely is a real deal car. That said, there are several drawbacks to this vehicle when viewed from the perspective of an American driver.

For starters, its designation as a “city car” is quite literally correct. That means that it’s pretty much as fast off the line as any city car is going to get. There is no typical electric car “pushing sensation” when driving off, just a hint that the car will rapidly accelerate after it begins moving forward. Its optional “premium package” battery pack is estimated to hold a capacity of around 40 kWh (the 2027 Chevy Bolt’s battery capacity is about 65 kWh), and 114 HP, 110 lbs torque, with an electronic top speed limit of 85 mph certainly aren’t numbers for the highway.
Range is another consideration, or certainly would be in the case of the U.S. It’s hard to know exactly what kind of mileage you’re talking about because of the completely different ratings systems being used in other parts of the world, China especially. Our best bet is that it’ll get between 170-190 miles per charge on an EPA scale. Geely says that the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack can go from 30% to 80% charged in 21 minutes on DC fast chargers, and the max level two charge rate is 6.6 kW, so it’s average, at best.

It’s smaller-looking than it actually is. For example, at a little over 163 inches long with a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, one of the closest comparisons you could make would be to a Mini Cooper 4 Door, which is 158.9 inches long with a 101.1-inch wheelbase. Weighing in at almost 2,850 pounds at most, the Mini weighs about 250 pounds more.
We did not receive any interior measurements, but it is safe to say that the vehicle is incredibly spacious inside considering its exterior size. I am six feet tall, and I found myself sitting comfortably in the backseat while the car took part in one of the autocross events with ample space in my legs and head.
And then there is the generous-sized but optional 14.6-inch infotainment display, the comfy front and rear seating arrangements, the neat build quality, that spacious cabin, and a center storage compartment that’s actually useable. In other words, all that you could possibly ask for in a daily-driver automobile. And there is even a substantial front trunk in addition to the decent-sized trunk at the back end. The styling is decidedly unthreatening with its slightly bulbous but streamlined bodywork accentuated by sweptback headlights and flush-mounted doors. Rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions are also available. Oh, did we forget to mention that it costs only $10,000?
However, although it is possible that the tariffs were removed, and Geely was able to deliver the EX2 into the U.S. market overnight, it is not likely for the price to remain at such an appealing level. Nevertheless, assuming that the vehicle could somehow fall within the range of $20,000 to $25,000, we think that there is a future.
The question of long-term reliability remains unanswered for now since it was not even manufactured until the end of 2024. We believe that it will obtain good results when put through American tests, but that’s another matter altogether. Furthermore, we were not provided with the opportunity to test it thoroughly for its road grip, fast driving, and overall driving characteristics.
In any case, however, it is very unlikely that this car will find itself in America’s markets anytime soon, despite its availability in both Mexico and possibly Canada. It is unfortunate since America badly needs a highly economical EV like the EX2, whether Chinese made or not.
