New Ducati Formula 73 Revealed – Exclusive, Powerful, Stunning

Designed to commemorate the 750 Super Sport Desmo, the 803cc café racer homage bike is expected to be produced in only 873 units across the world

In order to commemorate the company’s 100th anniversary, Ducati has announced a special motorcycle, the Formula 73, which is designed to introduce a contemporary interpretation of the design and style of one of the motorcycles that defined the Ducati brand. The Formula 73 honors the 750 Super Sport Desmo, which was the first road Ducati motorcycle with a desmodromic valve timing system.

The original Super Sport motorcycle was essentially a street version of the 750 Imola Desmo by which Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari won the 200 Miglia di Imola race in 1972. This was the first European race in which motorcycles derived from production bikes competed. According to Ducati, the success in the Imola race and the launch of the 750 Super Sport Desmo marked the beginning of Ducati’s production racing history, which has since achieved over 400 wins, sixteen riders’ titles, and twenty-one manufacturers’ titles.

According to Ducati, “This motorcycle has been designed to pay homage to the legendary machine, which was already an icon for Style, Sophistication, and Performance, principles which have guided us throughout our entire history.” As stated by Ducati, “The Formula 73 is a limited production motorcycle for people who appreciate unique styling and personality, down to the smallest details.”

The Formula 73 motorcycle range is considered to be an innovative interpretation of the 1973 750 Super Sport Desmo, featuring slim dimensions and minimalist cafe racer styling. The bike is powered by an air-cooled Ducati twin-cylinder motor and is marketed as a combination of “Urban Cafe Racer” spirit and Ducati heritage.

The design features include the paint scheme consisting of silver and aqua green color scheme researched in Ducati’s heritage archives at the Ducati Design Centre. The gold-colored vertical line painted on the tank takes inspiration from an unpainted stripe employed in the production of the 750 Imola Desmo, helping the crew determine the gasoline reserve without any additional devices. Other elements are clip-on bars with bar end mirrors, a narrow tail and fairing.
