With the arrival of the 2026 Kawasaki KLE500 SE ABS, the famous model makes its comeback in the adventure motorcycle class, but now it is more relevant than ever. According to the Cycle World’s first test ride of the KLE500, this motorcycle has been developed as an inexpensive, user-friendly way to start riding in the ADV class but still capable enough to keep experienced riders satisfied.
Essentially, the KLE500 runs on a 451cc parallel twin engine that comes directly from Kawasaki’s roadbike series. The engine delivers approximately 51 horsepower, which gives just enough oomph for an adventurous ride. Instead of emphasizing raw horsepower numbers, Kawasaki decided to make the engine easier to use and control, making it ideal for novice riders trying their hand at off-road riding.

The other notable feature of the KLE500 SE ABS is its versatility. In the first ride, the motorcycle proved itself competent in terms of riding on both tarmac roads and dirt trails. When riding on the highway, one will appreciate the stability and composure of the motorcycle. Besides, the power provided by the engine is sufficient for overtaking and does not vibrate too much. The riding position is upright and comfortable, which means the motorcycle is fit for long distance travel. Even though the motorcycle features a small wind screen, wind protection remains quite decent.
When riding in dirt areas, the KLE500 shows itself friendly to beginner riders. Thanks to its light chassis and moderate power output, a beginner rider can easily ride even in the most difficult conditions, including riding on slippery terrain. This becomes possible due to proper and smooth engine torque distribution that keeps the traction level high.

There are some limitations associated with the KLE500, though. For instance, the design of the suspension system makes it work well in moderate conditions. However, it fails to perform well when the rider tries to challenge the machine and push it to its limits. When navigating through rough trails that feature deep ruts, rocks, or high impact speeds, there is a likelihood of the suspension system bottoming out. Another limitation worth noting is the bike’s low ground clearance, which is only ideal for moderate off-roading. Overall, the KLE500 should not be considered an adventure motorcycle but rather a touring machine designed for recreational use.

In addition to the standard specifications and features, the SE version is fitted with a number of additional features aimed at making it more functional. These include a TFT display, hand guards, skid plates, and touring equipment such as side bags and a rear rack.
Another notable aspect of the bike is the ABS system that can be turned off when the rider needs it. For instance, when riding on loose soil, having ABS disabled will improve control. However, it is impossible to adjust the ABS separately for front and rear wheels, and therefore, some riders might find this feature limiting.
Regarding the design, Kawasaki has managed to make the motorcycle look like an adventure bike should. Thus, it has a tough design with such characteristics as a trellis frame, a long travel suspension, and block pattern tires. Even though the bike may seem rather ordinary among other ADV motorcycles, it still manages to look like an adventure bike despite its simplicity.
Overall, one can say that Kawasaki intended to make the KLE500 an entry-level adventure motorcycle. In particular, this means that it will never compete with more advanced models, such as the Ninja. Instead, it will focus on being user-friendly and affordable.
