Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Debuts Tomorrow as the First Electric GTI

It won’t be long before the world gets its hands on the first-ever electric GTI. The much-awaited launch date is set for tomorrow, which happens to be the 15th of May 2026. It is an event that the world-renowned German manufacturer has planned with all its heart to show how electric vehicles can embody the legacy of GTI. People have been waiting to witness the electric power of GTI cars for a very long time as the company unveiled its concept version of the electric GTI almost three years ago.

According to the press release, Volkswagen will be launching the electric GTI to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its GTI range. It was quite obvious why the German manufacturer chose this very year for launching its electric GTI since doing so would connect both ends of the spectrum of the “Hot Hatch.” Although Volkswagen has already unveiled its standard ID. Polo model in Europe, it seems as though it is the GTI version that everyone is eagerly waiting for. According to design spokesperson Stepan Rehak, ID. Polo GTI will sport a compact yet assertive design, along with its famous red stripe across the grille.

However, under that metal, an electric motor will sit in the front of the ID. Polo GTI. It is known that this motor outputs 166 kW of power, which translates into 222 hp. According to the manufacturer, this makes the car the most powerful Polo ever produced by VW. However, it is also the biggest and heaviest Polo ever built, and it needs all the horsepower to enjoy driving it.

The battery pack in the Polo GTI has a capacity of 52.2 kWh and is made of nickel, manganese, and cobalt. In theory, it is able to make the vehicle run over 450 km without recharging. However, we will find out how good it is at taking corners only later.

Interestingly, the manufacturer is not limiting itself only by one performance model, as a more potent “Clubsport” model is said to be under development. Florian Umbach, the chief driving dynamics manager at VW, shared that the company seeks more power out of the existing combination of battery and drive units. With its help, the Clubsport edition would provide a total output of 210 kW (282 hp). Here, however, Volkswagen faces the problem of controlling all of this torque through the front wheels, meaning the company wants to take this approach as far as possible.

One of the most distinctive yet somewhat disputable traits of the ID.4 GTX is the simulated gear shifting feature. Indeed, there is no transmission in electric cars, although Volkswagen aims at simulating such a feel. This is done with a technology similar to what Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is using, including paddle shifters installed on the steering wheel which emulate an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission experience. Moreover, it involves using artificial noises that will give the impression that the driver shifts the gears himself.

Finally, the inside of the car will not ignore the feelings of longtime fans. This particular ID. Polo GTI has the option called “retro mode,” which changes screens in a digital instrument cluster so that they would remind the analog ones seen on the original Mk1 Golf GTI. This is a small thing, but it is quite clear that Volkswagen attempts to preserve traditions even while launching their fully electric lineup. As for the rest of the modifications, there are rumors about special seats and trim inspired by tartan pattern. All the details will be revealed tomorrow.

Finally, the prices of this car need to be discussed. The regular ID. Polo Life debuted in Germany, starting from €33,795. A regular ID. Polo variant should appear within the next few months, at the starting price of €24,995. It is quite expected that an ID. Polo GTI variant would cost a bit more due to GTI badging and all the additional options. The entry-level price tag of such a machine should be around €38,000. However, if you decide to buy the Clubsport variant, you may end up spending up to €45,000.
