Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Set to Launch as the First EV GTI

Volkswagen showed off their ID. GTI concept car at the IAA Auto Show held in September 2023.

The year is now celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the GTI model, and as part of this celebration, Volkswagen is set to launch the first ever all-electric GTI model soon.

A sneak preview of the vehicle was shown at last year’s Munich Motor Show where Volkswagen also launched their ID. Polo GTI concept car that would soon be produced in reality as ID. Polo GTI.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo is the latest addition to the German automaker’s portfolio of entry-level electric vehicles that hit the market last week in Europe.

Now Volkswagen is ready to present the GTI version of the car, and that will happen on Friday, May 15, 2026, according to Volkswagen brand design spokesperson Stepan Rehak.

As Rehak puts it, “it takes the GTI into the electric future” thanks to a small but assertive design packed with personality. The Volkswagen executive also teased that the red strip seen at the front grille in the first images would be included in the final ID. Polo GTI.

The upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI will be the most potent Polo to date thanks to a single motor located in the front axle that generates 222 hp (166 kW).

Like its conventional counterpart, the ID. Polo GTI will be powered by a 52.2 kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery. According to VW, this allows for a WLTP range of up to 282 miles (484 km).

We already knew that the electric-powered hot hatch will be offered in another body style, at least, since a disguised prototype was spotted during testing (as reported by AutoEvolution and shown in the image below) earlier in the year. While the production version is speculated to come in an R-Line guise, we are now hearing about another GTI variant in the pipeline.

As reported by Autocar, the head of driving dynamics at Volkswagen, Florian Umbach, said that the company plans to introduce a more potent version known as “Clubsport.”

Although the specific information is not clear, it is expected that the new Clubsport version will offer about 282 hp compared to the 223 hp offered in the ID. Polo GTI.

“We are working on that,” Umbach confirmed to Autocar, adding, “there certainly is still plenty more peak power that can be extracted from the motor and the existing battery hardware, and there is still torque capacity left on the front axle too.”

The Volkswagen engineer responsible for driving dynamics said the company will be offering “something similar to what Hyundai is offering with their N series cars.”

The N e-Shift is a simulated gear shifting mechanism available in Hyundai’s sports electric vehicles such as the IONIQ 5 N and the IONIQ 6 N through paddles shifters at the steering wheel which simulate the experience of having a 8-speed dual-clutch transmission mechanism in tandem with Hyundai’s N Active Sound+ technology.

As the VW ID. Polo has a retro mode that allows the cluster to emulate the first generation (MK1) Golf model, it makes sense to incorporate a gearshift mechanism into the design.

Porsche has stated that they are working on introducing fake gear sounds and shifting in their future performance EVs.

Volkswagen started accepting orders for the ID. Polo Life equipped with the 155 kW powertrain and 52 kWh battery in Germany over a week ago, starting at 33,795 euros ($40,000).

Base ID. Polo would follow this summer with a starting price of 24,995 euros ($29,000). Prices will be revealed closer to launch, but it’s safe to assume that the ID. Polo GTI will start somewhere near 38,000 euros ($45,000), while the Clubsport version will retail somewhere between 40,000 euros ($47,000) and 45,000 euros ($53,000).

Although the ID. Polo GTI will be unveiled this week, CEO Thomas Shafer disclosed on Wednesday that Volkswagen will launch their electric Golf not in 2028 but rather late in the decade.
